MORRO BAY (pop. 9,700, elev. 80') is located along the central coast of California, about half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco.  Both the town of Morro Bay and the bay that fronts it are named for Morro Rock, the great conical rock that juts up 578 feet out of the Pacific Ocean.  In the 1870s, Morro Bay was a port for the region's cattle ranching and dairy industries.  Later, commercial fishing and oyster farming became prominent.  Morro Bay still maintains a large commercial fishing fleet.
MORRO ROCK was named by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo when he first charted this coast during his 16th Century voyage of discovery.  It is a landmark that can be seen from miles away.
Morro Bay is one of our favorite places to go for a "getaway" weekend (or any other time). Here are some of our photos of this central coast town.

When we want to get away for a few days, Morro Bay is a pleasant excursion.  Here are some pictures from our last visit.

Morro Rock is one of the most facinating geographic features of the area.
